What precautions can we take for the onset of Diabetes? How to tackle the early stages of Diabetes?

June 6th, 2009 | by admin |

My mother (65 years old) has been diagnosed with blood sugar which is slightly above the normal. Doctor has not given medicines but some diet restrictions. How can she lead a normal life without getting affected by Diabetes? She has a very active & healthy life so far, I wish to protect her from any unwanted troubles due to this onset of Diabetes. Please advise.

If diabetes could be described as having a personality, it most surely would be temperamental. It has volatile mood swings and easily flies out of control. It presents constant challenges, demanding discipline, restraint, and planning.

With good self-management, you can enjoy a healthy life and minimize your chances of developing complications.

Essential Steps for Keeping Healthy
Practice good blood sugar control.

Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly.

Have a glycosylated hemoglobin test every three to six months, or more often if you're pregnant.

Eat a healthy, varied diet, sticking to foods that are low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and limit "concentrated" sweets like candy.

Exercise regularly and maintain a normal weight.

Schedule regular visits with your doctor. Have your blood pressure and feet checked at all visits. Your doctor should test your blood lipids and kidney function regularly and do an annual EKG.

Have an annual eye exam by an ophthalmologist. This should be done from the time of diagnosis in people with type 2 diabetes, and starting five years after diagnosis in people with type 1 diabetes.

To avoid illness, stay up-to-date on your immunizations. Talk to your doctor about getting vaccinated against the flu, pneumococcal disease (such as pneumonia and meningitis), hepatitis, tetanus, and diphtheria.

Practice good foot and skin care.

Visit a dentist regularly.

Avoid risky behaviors, such as smoking or drug or alcohol abuse.

Learn as much as you can about diabetes, and educate others close to you.

Stay away from white bread or anything made with white flour, including pasta, no white rice or white potatoes. Lower the carbs in the diet, no sugar. Get lots of exercise. Eat more veggies, lean cuts of meat, no high fat food.

If your mom is even slightly overweight getting rid of the extra pounds will help greatly. Other than that keeping tight control of her blood sugar will prevent complications down line.

She should eat a balanced and healthy diet and pursue an active life style if possible including some form of aerobic workout. She should also try to maintain ideal body weight. To the degree she is obese or overweight she will be more prone to develop diabetes. The fact that her sugar is slightly above normal does not mean that she definitely will become diabetic but if she does it probably will not be that difficult to control and she can still lead a normal life. If she is in good shape to begin with expect the best and deal with the worst if and when it occurs.

She needs to eat regular balanced meals 3-4 times a day, avoid sugar and sugary snacks. Low GI factor foods such as wholegrain cereals, granary bread, basmatti rice, wholewheat pasta will help. Refined foods such as white flour, bread, sugar etc causes blood sugar levels to rise too rapidly for the prediabetic/diabetic body to handle. Regular daily exercise will help her to use the sugar in her blood also.
Prediabetic people can avoid or delay diabetes by following a diabetic exercise and diet regime. It is also important to maintain a healthy weight – so any excess weight shuld be carefully dieted off.

The best thing for your mom is to have her watch her diet….sugars and a lot of carbs. Potatoes, spaghetti, rice are LOADED with carb which turn into sugar.
Exercise is very important too, and can decrease the levels in the blood.
    I wish her the best.

The best way to keep diabetics under control is to do simple exercise like walking. my advice is that you have to buy a sugar check machine which tells your blood sugar level. but pls don't over do anything which may lead to low sugar if she feels uncomfortable or uneasiness give her a teaspoon of sugar. walking is compulsory. pls follow the diet restrictions. this are the most imp thigs which is to be followed. pls take her for a check up at least once two months. pls tell her not to take root vegetables like carrot, potato etc because it contains stracth which increases the blood sugar.

with your question, that it is the pre-diabetes,the people with pre-diabetes are at incresed risk for develpoing type2 diabetes and for heart disease and stroke, when they will neglected in future. Need to take some precautions to prevent the pre-diabetes . such as to make daily meal plan ie, to eat limited carbs, fat, and protien, item foods. and to do regular excercise for 30 minutes each day. and Try to reduce your weight as ( BMI) to weight. Early in ones life as diabetic, education is your best defense. Developing discipline based on that education for the expression of your diabetic condition is 2nd best.

You state your mother was diagnosed blood glucose above normal. Those number can be a lot to deal with. At my blog site I have a Blood Glucose table that relates HbA1C test with daily glucose monitor tests. Study the table I hope it helps.

    1. Brisk walk in the morning daily for half hour.
    2. Dibonil a homeopathy liquid. Take 10 drops each in half cup water twice a day on empty stomach. Check the sugar level every month to adjust the dosage,
    3. Drinking Indian MUlberry fruit juice also very effective.
