What Will You Learn In Massage Therapy Class?

August 16th, 2009 | by admin |

Enrolling in a massage therapy class is a good thing. In fact, if you are looking to become a provider of massages, then you’ll need this type of experience to improver you overall skill level. There are a number of different classes you’ll need to take to become certified, of course, and massage techniques will be the focus of each of those classes. But, many massage therapy schools are also providing more information and education to you beyond this. They are helping you to build the skill you need to be successful at what you want to do.

A massage therapy class will have the focus of teaching you to improve your massage techniques and skills. This means learning many different movements, improving your overall skill and learning when to give each type of massage. You’ll also learn a lot about the body, how it works and how a massage affects the systems in the body including muscle tissue, the circulatory system, the skin, and even the lymphatic system. The physical aspect of the classes that you take will be the most important for you to learn because it teaches you how to do what you are setting out to do.

In addition to this, you may want to consider other massage therapy classes as well. Many will offer you people skill training and customer service skills. Some will offer you the ability to start your own business by teaching you business administration and management skills. Even further, you’ll learn tools to increasing your business and how to manage the financial aspects of your business.

Look for a school that provides a certification in massage therapy. Look for one that offers a range of classes, each providing you with a bit of information and skill that you need to be successful in the massage world. It takes more than one massage therapy class to learn a skill to fund your life.

How much it costs to learn massage therapy?
I don’t wanna be a professional or get a license. Its just that I wanna learn a little experience to give a decent massage. So I am just wondering about how much it would cost me to learn massage classes for a level a little above beginner?

I am currently a massage therapy student. After years of performing massage for family and friends I decided that I wanted to increase my skills & knowledge base to a professional level so I started school. However, if you just want to learn the basics of a good massage you can do that by asking a professional massage therapist to teach you the basics.

I could teach someone enough to give an above average massage in a handful of lessons. At that point you would need to PRACTICE consistantly on someone. So figure paying a CMT for a few sessions at their "teaching" rate which could range anywhere from $70-$100/hour.

Remember, you won’t know the anatomy, contra-indications, safety issues, danger zones, or advanced techniques of a trained professional, but it will accomplish your goal.

A lot of spas or massage schools offer a basic "how to" massage class. The Edgar Cayce center in Virginia Beach offers a weekend intro to massage class for around $200. I don’t know what area you’re in, but they may have something similar where you are.
You may also want to try and hire a massage therapist to show you a good routine that you can then modify to your liking. However, I would suggest that you study at least basic anatomy and physiology as it is important to massage.
    Good luck!

I would suggest avoiding classes if you’re looking to save money. The easiest thing to do would to be buy Massage for Dummies, or another massage basics book and then watch some videos on youtube of the basic techniques. After you feel comfortable seeing them, go get a massage and ask your therapist what they’re doing. After that, just practice on friends and family! Basic massage for friends is really easy and fun:)
