Did you know that the incidences of colds during “cold and flu season” can be reduced considerably by daily exercise? As a chiropractor, I try to give my patients as much incentive to exercise as possible, and though I’ve been aware for years that exercise helps people stay healthier, I’m always happy to point out a study that proves the point. So, I was happy to read about multiple studies performed by David C. Nieman, DrPH, FACSM, an expert from the American College of Sports Medicine.

Nieman’s studies have shown a 25- to 50-percent decrease in sick time for active people completing at least 45 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise (such as walking) most days of the week. “This reduction in illness far exceeds anything a drug or pill can offer,” Nieman said. “All is takes is a pair of walking shoes to help prevent becoming one of the thousands predicted to suffer from the common cold this winter.”

Nieman offers tips if you’re already sick and aren’t sure whether to hit the gym or the couch. The tips can be found at medicalnewstoday.com
